If you choose the team that is favored, the Washington Capitals in this case, then they must win by the point spread number indicated next to the money line. - The Orlando Magic are playing the Chicago Bulls in this NBA point spread example. The Magic have been set as 5.5 point overall favorites according to this betting line. For Orlando to cover the spread, the Magic would need to win by at least six points. For the Bulls to get the win against the spread, a loss by five points or less is needed.
- What is a Point Spread or Side Bet? A point spread is used in sports betting to even the odds between two unevenly matched teams. Each team is given a point total by the oddsmaker that can either be added or subtracted to the final score, thus factoring into if the bet was won or lost. As you can see, the table is quite large and we have only covered the point spread most often used by the sportsbooks. Of course, the spread can go much higher than 15 and sometimes does, especially when two teams are quite mismatched in strength.
